About Us
The Cholmondeleys and The Featherstonehaughs are amongst the UK’s most enduring contemporary dance companies. Under the artistic direction of Lea Anderson, both companies have sustained an inventive and highly distinctive output for over 25 years and pioneered work in non-theatrical spaces and other media such as film and video. As one of the most important figures in British contemporary dance, Lea Anderson is known for her original and off-kilter choreographic style and for championing a meticulous and rich creative process along with a sense of ambition and expectation.
Lea Anderson, Teresa Barker and Gaynor Coward formed the all-female Cholmondeleys in 1984. Casting aside traditional dance techniques in favour of detailed observation of everyday movement and behaviour, their work became defined by a style that is idiosyncratic and highly original.
The Featherstonehaughs were formed in 1988 and were the only all-male dance company in Britain. An eclectic group with diverse performance backgrounds, The Featherstonehaughs present a refreshing alternative to the conventional images of men in dance.
Reach
Over the years both companies have toured extensively throughout Britain, Europe, Australia and New Zealand sometimes with separate and sometimes with joint productions. They have performed at Glastonbury, in theatres large and small, at Duckie at The Royal Vauxhall Tavern, on Vauxhall Bridge, at Tate Modern, on beaches, ferries, lifts, in a garden store, in cars, towers and on the GCSE and A-Level syllabus.
